What makes a great funky shoe? For me it's the awe factor. That certain something that makes people stop in the streets and stare at my shoes. I love the different responses: quizzical, humorous or the rare request for pictures. There is something fun about wearing a shoe that makes you feel fun and frivolous, or funky and cool. Carrie, from Sex and the City, had it right about shoes. When she went up to the store window, gazed at her shoes and longingly said "hello lover", that is how I feel when I see a truly magnificent pair of shoes. There are a number of brands that give that feel, but some are too pricey, and others too cheap looking. I've found a number of brands that really stand out and don't cost your weeks salary.
Chinese Laundry, Hot Topic, Rocket Dog and a few others are really terrific shoes. They also have some great boots which can look fantastic with a knee high, or shorter, skirt.
Chinese Laundry generally has more mainstream shoes with some funky styles. They cost anywhere from $30-$100 and worth every penny. There are some lovely colors such as orange, forest green and bright yellow. There are also more subdued colors like brown and black, of course. And they have some fashionable work safe funky shoes for the office.
If you're looking for totally funky and fun, you'll want to go with Hot Topic or Rocket Dog. Most of their shoes are directly targeting the teens and early 20s gals out there, but there are some significantly gorgeous and sexy shoes for those of us not clubbing every night. Prices range from $30-$80.
My absolute favorites are the Naughty Monkey brand. It's actually a close race between Naughty Monkey and Chinese Laundry. Both have some wild and fabulous shoes that really look amazing, but most definitely do not have the same designers. There are some beautiful pink stilettos and chunky heeled shoes that would look amazing with a Chanel suit or a fancy party dress. Prices range from $40-$80 and a rare few at higher prices.
You can find all these brands at numerous web shops, and for prices you can't beat stores like Amazon or eBay. However, since fits can vary, I suggest visiting local shops to try the shoes on. With shipping costs, oftentimes the prices are similar, however returning a shoe to a local store is infinitely easier than sending it back on-line.
